JULIE CHANDLER
Julie Chandler is an Australian contemporary artist living and working in Victoria’s beautiful Macedon Ranges. Inspired by the challenge of the human face, Julie creates portraits that are compelling and evocative and make unforgettable statement pieces in any home.

Even as a child, Julie loved art more than any other subject. Encouraged by her teachers, she pursued a creative career in interior design and spent twenty years immersed in colour, form, size, and space. This work gave her a deep appreciation for and understanding of colour and form that she brings to her artistic practice today.

Retirement enabled Julie to return to the painting and drawing she had always loved best. She studied with artist Colin Johnson, learning precision and technique. ‘Once you know the rules,’ Julie says, ‘you begin to see how they can be bent and altered to create an art form that is unique and compelling’. Further studies with accomplished and well-known teachers in Australia, Italy, and the UK cemented her capacity to capture the details and particularities of human faces in a variety of mediums.

Julie’s art practice has flourished in her new purpose-built studio – constructed before the house, such was its importance on the property. Overlooking her veggie garden and Mount Towrong, Julie’s studio is a retreat in which she can forge a connection with her subjects on paper and canvas. She loves to create pieces that enliven homes and celebrate the human subject with depth and compassion.
